Welcome to my blog!
Here you will find information about my work as a psychotherapist, licensed social worker, and group facilitator as well as my other areas of specialty. Also included are professional and personal experiences that have shaped my work, as well as various links, articles, and information pertinent to my work and related interests.
I have 25+ years experience as a counselor and psychotherapist in varied public and private mental health settings. Currently I have a part time private practice, I work at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospice, and facilitate ongoing cancer support groups. I plan to be working with soldiers returning form Iraq this coming spring.
My work over the last 10 yrs. has been greatly influenced by being faced with a life threatening illness. I am a 2-time cancer survivor and I believe this experience to be one of my greatest life teachers. It led me to a deeper understanding of being on the "edge" and taught me how to live more fully and in the present. I also believe it has deepened my compassion, desire for healing, and dedication to doing this kind of work.
I worked at The Petaluma Health Center (a Mental Health Clinic) for 7 years, serving an extremely diverse population of people with significant mental health issues ranging from trauma, PTSD, chronic depression, grief and loss, addiction, and ongoing life crisis. During that time period I worked with many Viet Nam Veterans and developed a special interest and affinity for working with Vets and the primary issues they struggle with.
As an Expressive Arts Therapist my passion and specific focus in my therapeutic work is using varied forms of expressive arts as a primary healing tool. I have found that using music, collage, and visual arts in my work has touched many of my clients from all walks of life. Expressive Arts can bring a sense of wholeness, healing and balance not only to ones physical body, but also to one’s heart, mind, and spirit in a unique and personal way.
Expressive arts are not only my area of specialty in my work, but one of my life's passions as well. As a musician and percussionist I have a deep love for music (of many types) and also Sound Healing work (please visit the corresponding links on this site),
My work continues to evolve as my own life’s' experiences - both personal and professional - expand. I also want to note that my interests in meditation, varied spiritual and shamanic practices, mythology, ceremony and ritual are all elements woven into my work.
I see this work as sacred, and to be in the role of collaborator, facilitator, witness and guide is a great honor. I would like to express my immense gratitude for all my teachers in all their many forms, including those experiences in which I have gained tremendous courage, wisdom and faith, especially in regards to the mystery and sacredness of life.
Many blessings,
~ Deb
